Article processing charges (APCs)

Earth System Science Data is committed to the open-access model of publishing. This ensures free web access to the results of research and maximum visibility for published papers. However, it requires the author or a supporting institution to pay the costs of the review process, typesetting, web publication, and long-term archiving. These article processing charges (APCs) are levied for the publication of the final revised paper in the journal (preprints are free of charge).

The article processing charges (APC) for any manuscript submitted from 1 January 2023 are €1,400 net per paper accepted & produced for final journal publication in ESSD. The APCs for manuscripts submitted before 2023 continue to be waived.

Financial support

What is included in ESSD's article processing charges?

  • all online tools for authors, editors, and reviewers;
  • professional processing of figures;
  • typesetting, editing, and formatting in PDFLaTeX;
  • English language copy-editing for final revised papers;
  • immediate open-access publication of each article in *.pdf, *.xml, and *.html format;

In addition to the provided services, any surplus of ESSD is given back to the community in 2 different ways: (a) APC discounts and waiver to authors lacking support of funds and (b) reinvestments in the community by funding data rescue projects, donating into open-data infrastructure, supporting young-scientists with grants, and similar endeavours.
