Special interest in the interactions between fields (physics and chemistry) and modulations by atmospheric processes at different scales. My work spans sustainable forestry, land use management, and regenerative agriculture to drive emission reductions and removals.

I am using natural radionuclides, as well as those produced by activities such as atomic weapons testing, to study Earth surface processes. The difference of different chemical elements within the decay series provides indeed a large suit of natural clock to study a large range of processes from erosion to sedimentation rates. Whereas my first works were focused on oceanic margin, I apply now this approach in transitional and fresh waters. In addition to better characterize fluxes at the land-ocean interface and impact on water quality, I am now responsible of a high-frequency monitoring in the Gironde estuary to better understand changes in water quality (defined by salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity) and to help local water authorities to define preventive management strategies regarding the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) to reach “good ecological status” of transitional waters. In brief, I have an initial training in chemistry and marine sciences in a context of climate change, and I could be defined as a marine biogeochemist. From the evolution of my research works, from water column to sediment and toward transitional waters (estuaries) and lakes, I gained skills in freshwater chemistry and sedimentology.

Dr. Hanqin Tian is Director of Center for Earth System Science and Global Sustainability, Schiller Institute Professor and Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Boston College. Dr. Tian has worked across the disciplinary lines of earth system science, ecology, biogeochemistry, hydrology, earth system modeling, remote sensing and data science. His research on global carbon and nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas emissions is at the leading edge of the field. His research has resulted in over 400 peer-reviewed research articles published in most prestigious journals including over 30 papers in Nature, Science, PNAS and their sister journals. Dr. Tian is a Highly Cited Researcher ranked by Clarivate Web of Science. He was also ranked among the world’s most influential climate scientists by the Reuters List. Dr. Tian is a coordinating lead author for the International Nitrogen Assessment and a contributing author for IPCC AR6. He has served on the Steering Scientific Committee of Global Carbon Project (GCP) and Co-Chair of the International Scientific Committee for Global Nitrous Oxide Budget Assessment.
